July 31st, 2024: U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) introduced the Falun Gong Protection Act to combat forced organ harvesting, calling for sanctions on foreign persons that are responsible for, complicit in or have engaged in the involuntary harvesting of organs in China – in particular from Falun Gong practitioners.
The bill was previously introduced in the House of Representatives by U.S. Representative Scott Perry (R-PA).
Excerpt of the bill (Statement of Policy):
It is the policy of the United States to—
(1) avoid any cooperation with the People’s Republic of China in the organ transplantation field while the Chinese Communist Party remains in power; (2) take appropriate measures, including using relevant sanctions authorities, to coerce the Chinese Communist Party to end any state-sponsored organ harvesting campaign; (3) work with allies, partners, and multilateral institutions to highlight the People’s Republic of China’s persecution of Falun Gong; and (4) to coordinate closely with the international community on targeted sanctions and visa restrictions.
The bill was read twice in Senate and referred to the Committee on Foreign Relations.
